City of Asola

Italian municipality of about 10 thousand inhabitants, Asola, in the province of Mantua, falls within the ancient county of Brescia, whose passages and historical testimonies are still visible today. The city has always been at the center of bitter conflicts between neighboring lords: after the conquest of Asola by the Gonzagas, lords of Mantua, the city control passed under the hegemony of the Visconti of Milan before the final annexation, in 1440, to the Republic from Venice. And just under the domination of the Doge, the city soon turned into a fortress and a meeting place for artists and intellectuals of the time: Tintoretto himself, the famous Venetian painter, represented the city of Asola during the siege of the emperor's troops. Massimiliano I. But there are many beauties to appreciate in the streets of the historic center. The most famous is the Cathedral of Sant'Andrea, in perfect Gothic style, built starting in 1472, which preserves great examples of art, such as the famous paintings by Moretto. Also not to be missed is a visit to the Palazzo Pretorio, now the Town Hall, which preserves stuccoes and medallions of the Venetian Doges.
