Immersed in the Mantuan territory, between the moraine hills and the border with the province of Brescia, stands the agricultural and industrial town of Castiglione delle Stiviere. Among the most populous cities in the area (after the capital of Mantua), Castiglione was long the Lombard cultural center before the domination of the Gonzaga, Visconti and Scaligeri families. Even today the city preserves intact the testimonies of the ancient "lordships" such as the splendid Gonzaga castle, which stands on the top of the city and preserves the Basilica of San Sebastiano, built by Ferrante Gonzaga as a sign of devotion to survive the plague. The castle of Castione is just one of the wonders that you can admire in the city. Do not miss a visit to the historic city center that shows all its beauty in Piazza Ugo Dallò, also known as Piazza Colonna, which has in the center the eighteenth-century fountain dedicated to Sunday Calubini: built by the Gonzaga family to honor the woman who preferred to be kill rather than give in to the violence of French soldiers. Also not to be missed is a visit to the Teatro Sociale, designed by the architect Luigi Canonica, and to the International Museum of the Red Cross, inaugurated in 1959 on the occasion of the centenary of the birth of the well-known health foundation.
