"City of Bridges and Arches" the municipality of Tirano, in the province of Sondrio, fascinates visitors for its elegant style (typically in "Liberty" style), which can be appreciated in every corner of the historic center. Set between the Alps, between the Adda and Poschiavino rivers, the city of Tirano, since the 14th century, has been an important center for the traffic of goods between Italy and Switzerland. In the historical city center it is possible to appreciate stone portals, ancient walls, basilicas, but it is also possible to appreciate the typical local cuisine, in which traditional products like the famous "chiosciol" (buckwheat fritters) strictly watered with Valtellina DOC wines . The city of Tirano is also famous for the prestigious sanctuary dedicated to the Blessed Virgin, which according to tradition appeared to a peasant in 1504 outside the city walls: the same site where today stands the place of worship. Among the wonders of Tirano also the Palazzo Foppoli, a destination recommended for lovers of "fine arts": inside the historic building of the '500 has in fact the Civic Hall Exhibitions where temporary events and exhibitions are set up throughout the year . Also not to be missed is a visit to the Casa Museo d'Oro Lambertenghi, the historic residence of the famous Tirano family, inserted among the historic residences of the world, which preserves precious furnishings, frescoes and art collections among the majestic ones of Europe. The Tiranese Ethnographic Museum, Piazza Basilica, and Palazzo Marinoni, now the Town Hall and formerly an Augustinian convent, are worth a visit.
The city of Tirano is well connected to the main towns of the province and is easily reachable from the municipalities of Milan, Brescia and Sondrio.
From Milan, take the SS 38 (Milan-Lecco-Sondrio), Tirano exit. From Brescia, on the other hand, you reach the Valle Camonica along SS39.
Tirano train station is served by the Trenitalia and Trenord companies and offers connections to the main cities of the region. Scheduled daily trips to the stations of Sondrio (about 45 minutes), Lecco (about 120 minutes), Monza (about 130 minutes) and Milan Central (about 150 minutes).
